Moringa Tea

Moringa tea is creating a lot of buzz among health-conscious tea drinkers because of its bountiful wellness and energy-generating benefits. Even health expert Dr. Oz recommends this herbal tea, as a way to gain energy, even though it contains no caffeine.

The tea is made from leaves of the moringa oleifera tree. Called the "miracle tree" in some countries, and "drumstick tree" in others, the tree is native to India's Himalayan Mountains. Almost all parts of the tree can be used in foods, including the leaves, pods, fruits, flowers, roots, and bark.

The trees are full of good things, including protein, iron (three times that of spinach), and other vitamins and antioxidants. Teas made from the tree leaves also contain these nutrients.

"Miracle Tree"

The moringa tree is well known to folks who work to feed the world's hungry. The tree is grown as a food crop in developing countries, including Central America, where it is grown like a vegetable. Undernourished children who eat moringa soon begin to flourish, thanks to the protein found in the plant.

The tree also grows in nearly every climate, including drought areas. The tree grows quickly from seed or from cuttings. The tree can grow 15 feet tall in its first year, and can reach 30 feet tall if left uncultivated.

The leaves from the tree can be put in salads, dried to make sauces, and used in baby formula. The immature seedpods can be eaten like asparagus.

An extract from the leaves has been used to boost corn yields because it helps other crops grow.  The tree is currently being studied for use as an oilseed crop, which means it may become a food and fuel crop, like corn.

Though native to India, the tree is also grown in Asia, Africa, and South America. In the United States, it is usually grown as an ornamental tree.

Abundant Wellness Attributes

This tea is thought to boost energy, aid mental clarity, lower cholesterol, and prevent blood clots.  It may also improve stamina and promote better sleep.

Additionally it is thought to help with arthritis pain and other painful joint issues. The tea may also help with inflammatory symptoms, promote weight loss, and aid in the digestive processes.

Some of the vitamins found in teas made from this miracle tree are K, C, and A, calcium, potassium. In all, this tea is thought to provide over 45 different antioxidants and have more than 35 different anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, it provides many essential amino acid, vitamins and minerals.



Preparation

This tea may be purchased at health food stores. Generally, it is available in the form of tea bags. Here are brewing guidelines for using the tea bags:

  • Heat a cup of water and pour it into a cup
  • Add one or two tea bags and cover
  • Steep for 3 to 5 minutes
  • Press a spoon against the tea bag to maximize dissolution
    Remove the tea bags
  • Add lemon and sweetener, if desired.

The tea may be served hot or cold.

Warnings

Drinking this herbal tea is thought to be generally safe, but there have been reports of increased bleeding when herbal supplements are taken with Gingko biloba, garlic, or saw palmetto.

Moringa may also lower blood sugar levels so caution is advised if blood sugar is an issue for you. It may lower blood pressure and interact with other herbs or medication you are taking.
